Olive Rock Capital

Most capital is in a hurry. Ours isn't.

Olive Rock Capital is an investment and private equity firm. We back established and growing companies with patient capital, and we stay long enough to see what they become.

An old olive tree rooted among great lichen-covered rocks.

Why Olive Rock

An olive tree can bear fruit for centuries, out of ground most crops would refuse. Rock is the foundation that stays put while the seasons change around it. We took the name because it describes the kind of investor we set out to be.

The firm was founded by people who had spent their careers in operating and investment roles. From the start the idea was simple: back good companies, help them get stronger, and don't sell them just because a calendar says so.

The twisted trunk of a centuries-old olive tree, its canopy lit by afternoon sun.

What we believe

  • Good businesses are often hard to read.

We would rather do the work to understand a complicated company than pay up for an obvious one. Some of our best investments looked messy from the outside.

  • Patience is a return, not a cost.

Compounding needs time. A company that isn't forced into a sale can make decisions for the next decade instead of the next exit.

  • Price the downside first.

Before we think about what could go right, we test every position against the cycles it may have to live through. Preserving capital is what lets us stay patient.

  • Capital is the smallest thing we bring.

Money is easy to find. A partner who has seen the next stage before, and who answers the phone, is not.

How a partnership works

From a first conversation to the years after we invest. The timings are typical, not fixed.

  1. A first conversation

Within two weeks of your note

A call with a partner about your company and what you're trying to do. No deck required.

  2. Getting to know the business

    Four to eight weeks

We meet the team, read the numbers and talk to customers. You'll know what we're looking at and why.

  3. The investment

    Two to four weeks

Clear terms, written plainly. We agree up front how we'll work together after the money arrives.

  4. The years after

    Ongoing

A board seat and a quarterly review, plus a partner you can call whenever you need one.

  5. What comes next

    When the time is right

We hold for as long as we can help. When a sale makes sense for the company, we plan it with you, never around you.

Some things are worth waiting for.

Stewardship, in practice

Good governance is how long-term value gets built. These are the commitments we hold ourselves to.

  • We take a board seat in every majority investment.
  • Each company gets an annual governance review with its board.
  • We report to our investors on every holding, every quarter.
  • We don't invest in tobacco, weapons or gambling.
